Post-natal Comeback: Body & Creativity

I'm not sure if I still qualify to be called "post-natal" as it's been a year now since birthing my latest baby, but i'm surely not the same body, mind and spirit as before the pregnancy. I quit my career after having this last baby, my Mirabelle, and with that came some big powerful changes. Not just the major ones that come with a total lifestyle change, but minor ones that have very large impact: the loss of commuting time and lunch hours. Turns out the loss of these is a HUGE deal for… Continue

The evolution of yoga, both past and present, are so fascinating to me. Knowing bits of the history of it lends even more richness to my practice. Like how Sun Salutations, Surya Namaskar, were a relatively modern invention brought about by the convergence of the Brits in India in the 1800's -- yogis' influence on the imperialists' military calesthenics. Like how the "wild thing" or "rock star" posture is a bold example of yoga's ongoing evolution -- I love it, it feels great -- and i'm no…

The Healing Magnet That Is Yoga

When omTownYogis (nee Milwaukee Yoga Teachers Group) was born in April 2010, I sent a survey to around 75 area yoga teachers. One of the questions was “what brought you to yoga?” Many of the responses, in fact most of the responses, were heartwarming stories of personal trauma ~ the loss of loved ones, the onset of an illness, a near-devastating physical injury. My entry into a more diligent practice of yoga came with the loss of my mother and birth of my first child. With these…

How do we know we are progressing in yoga?

"Real progress in Yoga starts when you learn to see and feel, for yourself, the actual effects of the various poses. A teacher can tell you what the benefits of a pose are, but when you actually feel it yourself, it is much more effective. It is like the difference between being told what the gears in a car do and learning to use them skillfully yourself and to feel their effects on the road and control of the vehicle. As you progress, or become more effective at using the tools of Yoga, you… Continue

omTownYogis: our purpose

The omTownYogis exist because the idea of individual yogis forming a community is just too compelling to ignore. We can help each other thrive as a learning, growing body by coming together, and we can do so both in person and online. While our yoga practices develop as do our mindfulness & conscientiousness; we become truer to ourselves and our values, and the decisions we make become wiser. Emanating from each of us a ripple effect occurs, a positive impact through our families,…

Ah, to let go and yet to guide...

An excerpt from Sally Kempton's Yoga Journal article "Break Away":

It’s the second day of a workshop I’m teaching, called “The Art of Letting Go.” I’ve planned a brief discussion on the yogic practice of releasing our tendency to over-control. The intention is that people will recognize how much pain they create when…
