About

omTownYogis is a volunteer organization dedicated to the local yoga community of greater Milwaukee. We seek to do social good by broadening the practice of yoga, effectively supporting not only happier and healthy lifestyles, but also more conscious and conscientious living.

We believe that yoga is a powerful force toward personal & community development. We work toward our mission by supporting yoga instructors, studio owners, and practitioners through community dialog, tools like this social website and events. We are currently filing for non-profit status as a 501(c)3 organization.

omTownYogis held Milwaukee's first Global Mala event in September 2010 at Pier Wisconsin/Discovery World with astounding results. Nearly 200 people came together on a rainy morning under a beautiful tent to practice yoga for world peace. In September 2011 we did it again, this time gathering nearly 300 people & their mats. We lifted our hearts as we raised funds for Meta House and our newly established Annual Grant Fund.

In collaboration with the Milwaukee Art Museum, we co-hosted the first ever yoga class held at the breathtaking Milwaukee Art Museum in 2011. This event sparked our current series, Yoga @ the Museum, drawing 200+ of the yoga community and showcasing a variety of local yoga teachers, all practicing together in Windhover Hall every month.

Through our Annual Grant Fund we provide scholarships and grants to local yoga teachers in a program called Opening the Doors of Yoga. The scholarships help fund teachers' ongoing yoga teacher education. The grants compensate teachers to bring yoga to groups of people who have limited access to and limited means to pay for yoga classes.

Another program we've organized is Yoga Passport, a way for students to explore several area studios at a very affordable price. The program benefits the studios, the students and our ongoing work, including our Annual Grant Fund.

In 2012 we helped to bring StreetYoga to Milwaukee, to provide teacher training to those wanting to bring yoga to at-risk youths. Through this program we successfully provided this nationally recognized training to several area yoga teachers.

omTown Yogis has also held a screening for the 2010 yoga documentary film, Titans of Yoga.

Our events raise awareness and funds for various local causes and our Annual Grant Fund. They also create new and exciting ways for local teachers and studios to reach out and for yoga practitioners to come together, practice together, and enjoy the energy of community.
