Yogi Q&A: Haley Stozek

1. What brought you to the practice of yoga?

Honestly, I heard that Madonna was practicing Yoga, so I thought I’d give it a try. I had no idea what a profound effect the practice would have on my life.  I went to Yoga for the physical benefits and stayed because of everything else!

2. Who are some of your yoga teachers?

Laura Flannigan (my first teacher who introduced Yoga to me), Shiva Rea (who validated my desire to flow EVERYTHING), Meg Galarza (who rocks an awesome flow class) & Myself (as I truly believe that when immersing oneself in an ancient energetic practice, we have to trust and learn from our inner teacher).  Other teachers who have inspired and influenced me include Seane Corne, Todd Norian, Saul David Raye & Desiree Rumbaugh.

3. How would you describe the form of yoga you teach currently?

Mostly Vinyasa, however I am influenced by a variety of other styles.

4. Where do you teach?

Haleybird Studios

5. Why do you teach?

Teaching Yoga is the easiest and most natural thing I have ever done in my life. The practice of Yoga has had such a positive change in my life.  It has taught me to live my life with honesty, love, and gratitude. To be able to share this experience with others is both a pleasure and an honor.

6. How do you describe what yoga is?

Yoga is the dedicated practice of finding the light of purity, love, gratitude, compassion, and peace that resides with in each of us.

7. What aspect of yoga do you personally want to explore more deeply?

This question is like picking a favorite child…it’s simply impossible to answer. There are so many aspects of Yoga that excite and interest me, Ayurveda, Kirtan, and Yoga Therapy are a few that come to mind first.  Last year I learned Thai Yoga Massage &  Transcendental Meditation and am looking forward to deepen my practice of each of these.  Life is good!

8. What are your thoughts on the growing popularity of yoga?

Awesome!  I love that Yoga has become “the cool thing to do”.  Regardless of the sensationalism of it, Yoga is an ancient practice that speaks for itself. Sure people might come to Yoga for tight abs or to regain the ability to touch their toes, but if a class is taught well with respect to the entire Yogic Tradition, the energetic and mind benefits are inevitable.  I firmly believe that the more people practicing Yoga, regardless of style, the more peace, purity, respect and kindness we are to see in our world.

9. What are your hobbies?

Enjoying music, walking, reiki, laughing with family & friends, & drinking red wine.

10. What is something unique or quirky about you that not many people know about?

I have 6 toes…just kidding!  I’ve played the cello for 22 years.
